It is a church of Romanesque origin, of which it retains some of the stylistic traits.
The present church dates back to the late thirteenth and early fourteenth century, when the Benedictine friars kept quarreling with nobles from the neighborhoods due to rights and landlords. In 1450, the privileges of the Monastery were confirmed by the King, five years before the Archbishop of Braga, D. Fernando da Guerra decided to convert it into a castle. The church was restored in the 16th century.
It was classified as National Monument by Decree of June 16, 1910.
