The Prague Jewish Museum was established in 1906 to document the history, customs and traditions of the Jewish community of Bohemia, Moravia and Prague, particularly at a time when the Josefov ghetto underwent radical urban reform and, in a way , lost its essence, its soul
His collections paradoxically became enriched thanks to Nazi Germany during World War II: The Nazis thought of making Josefov an exotic museum of an "extinct race" and brought many objects from synagogues and other places of Jewish communities of Central Europe. On August 4, 1950, the museum was administered by the Communist State of Czechoslovakia, which centralized all economic, cultural and worship activities. In 1996, this Jewish museum in Prague was handed over to the administration of the local Jewish community.
The museum runs five synagogues, Maisel, Pinkas, Klaus, Spanish and the Old Synagogue. He also manages the Prague Jewish Cemetery and community archives in the Smíchov Synagogue (Prague district)
