The old Jewish quarter, razed by a sanitation campaign that took place between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, does not really exist today. However, it is always possible to visit the various historical synagogues and the old Jewish cemetery.
The Jewish community of Prague was one of the most important in Europe and its presence in the city has been proven since the 8th century. Initially dispersed, the Jewish community regrouped around the Old City from the 18th century in the center of a Jewish city with autonomous jurisdiction. This community lived a very hectic history, in which periods of persecution (discriminations, expulsions) alternated with calmer periods that allowed the development of an inestimable cultural richness: in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century (period of the celebrated Rabbi Low and the mayor of the Jewish city Marcus Mordecai Maisel), the kingdom of Joseph II at the end of the eighteenth century (of which the Jewish quarter was named after Josefov in his honor), or at the beginning of the twentieth century with the emergence of the great writers of German language such as Franz Kafka and Max Brod.
At the end of the 19th century, the unhealthy state of the Jewish neighborhood prompted the city council to launch a major "sanitation" campaign (asanace in Czech), which led to the almost total destruction of the neighborhood. Its maze streets have been replaced by wide avenues that house beautiful bourgeois buildings. The most important is the street of Paris, currently surrounded by luxury shops. The historic synagogues and the old cemetery escaped from this brutal urban rehabilitation.
Visit the Jewish Quarter
- The Jewish Museum of Prague: with the exception of the Old-New Synagogue, all historical synagogues (Klaus, Maisel, Spanish, Pinkas) and the old cemetery are administered by the Jewish community through a single institutional structure. The rich collections of the Jewish museum, among the most important in the world, are displayed in different accessible places with a unique entrance.
- The Old-New Synagogue, one of the oldest Gothic buildings in Prague. The cult is still celebrated today.
- Shopping on the luxurious Paris street (Pařížská).
- Visit of the Museum of Decorative Arts.
