The house belonged to the Spaniard Sebastián Collado, who began the construction of four floors. When he died, he left it unfinished and his heirs did not continue the work, remaining abandoned for several years. Later Pablo Neruda, rescued it from the winds and the marine winter, inaugurating it with his friends on September 18, 1961.
For Neruda it was the home of the New Year's Eve parties in the port, watching the boats and fireworks with a lot of ´coquetelón´, a cocktail that he himself prepared dressed as a barman, with a red jacket and a burnt cork mustache. La Sebastiana with her five flats has an exceptional view of the bay of Valparaíso and its hills.
The Pablo Neruda Foundation, with the generous help of Telefónica de España, managed to rebuild step by step, carefully looking for the exact tone of the walls, the location of paintings and objects that Pablo Neruda, who in his endless searches for antique dealers, demolitions, flea markets, he managed to find and mix in the way only he knew how to do it. La Sebastiana was opened to the public as a museum in January 1992.

By bus
The trip takes 1 hour 45 minutes from Santiago. Existing departures with a frequency of 15 minutes, the bus companies offer a good level of service and comfort.
