They are community libraries that work in conjunction with municipal schools, have a collection of approximately 5,000 books, constituting cultural and leisure points for the community, and aim to diversify opportunities for access to knowledge, expanding the space of teaching formal. They are modular buildings of 88 m² with a 10 m high tower with luminous sign. These libraries were called Lighthouse of Knowledge, evoking the famous Library of Alexandria, a city that, representing an important cultural and economic center, brought the people closer and brightened Antiquity with the light of knowledge. The project provides for the installation of 48 community libraries in different neighborhoods of the city. The first library was inaugurated on November 19, 1994 under the name of Machado de Assis, in the Mercês district.
