The Museum of Brazilian Art (MAB) is a private cultural institution, located in the Jaraguá neighborhood, in Maceió, capital of the state of Alagoas. It is maintained by the Pierre Chalita Foundation, a non-profit organization created by Pierre Chalita in 1980. It preserves a varied collection of artistic objects, with special emphasis on northeastern art, especially from Alagoas. Promotes cultural events and painting workshops.
The Museum of Brazilian Art is one of two museums maintained by the Pierre Chalita Foundation, a private cultural institution created by the painter and collector Pierre Chalita, with the aim of promoting and exhibiting his private collection, composed of more than two thousand works, in addition to promoting interest in the visual arts and interaction with educational institutions and the like. The foundation was legally constituted on May 19, 1980, which is also the official date for the creation of museums.
The Museum of Brazilian Art has been installed since its creation in a space of 1486 square meters in area, distributed by two old warehouses, part of the architectural complex of the port district of Jaraguá, registered by the historical heritage of Alagoas. It has exhibition spaces, technical reserves and areas for teaching activities. In August 2008, an 800 square meter annex was erected in the warehouse yard, called Espaço Pierre Chalita - Museu de Arte Brasileira and intended to host events in general.
The collection of the Museu de Arte Brasileira includes part of the donation of 2270 works of art made by Pierre Chalita to its foundation in 1980. The other works are gathered at the Pierre Chalita Art Museum. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, drawings and decorative objects (ceramics, silver and furniture), from Brazil and other countries and dated between the 17th and 20th centuries.1 It also preserves objects linked to the history of the region's cinematographic projections.
The wide range of works by northeastern artists, especially from Alagoas, stands out, registering from Academicism to contemporary trends, such as Rosalvo Ribeiro, Frederico Ramos, Murilo LaGreca, Lídio Bandeira de Mello, Lourenço Peixoto, in addition to Pierre Chalita and others connected to the Modern Art Week of 1922.
