From the twelfth century it was occupied by the Benedictine congregation. In the sixteenth century, it became the mother house of order for Portugal and Brazil. The main existing buildings were built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. One of the architects who worked on them was André Soares.
Monastery of Tibães or Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães, including the Tibães Church and the Tibães Cross, is located in Mire de Tibães, county of Braga and was founded in the 11th century.
It was classified as Property of Public Interest in 1944.
