It is currently the oldest in the world in service to use the water balance system.
It is a funicular that connects the upper part of the city of Braga to the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary; is managed by the Confraternity of Bom Jesus do Monte.
The lift follows a path parallel to a monumental staircase known as Escadórios do Bom Jesus and ends at its top next to the equestrian statue of St. Longuinhos.
