Cacela-Velha Mother Church was built in 1518 on the ruins of the early medieval building, from the late 13th century, which has a small ogival side door, facing north.
Heavily damaged by the 1755 earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1795.
The main Renaissance-style portico has carved reliefs on the busts of St. Peter and St. Paul.
The two side pilasters are decorated with frowns, axes, tridents, angel heads, dragons, bows and quiver.
Inside, the three naves are separated by stone arches, warheads, supported by 1.70m high columns, with bases and capitals octaves, adorned with hemispheres or ropes.
Some figures stand out: S. José; Our Lady; St. John the Evangelist and St. Mary Magdalene.
The church occupies an enviable position with a magnificent panoramic view of the Ria Formosa.
