30 km north of the city of Cusco, along an asphalt road, we arrive at the town of Chincheros (3,762 meters above sea level), a town of Inca origin that receives the custody of the snowy Chicón and whose name originates from the Quechua sinchi voice, which it means '' brave man ''.
Strategically located at the crossroads of three roads that connect Cusco, Yucay and Pumamarca, this town was the obligatory step towards Machu Picchu in the Tahuantinsuyo era. This route started from the Carmenca neighborhood (current Santa Ana neighborhood, in Cusco), continued along the slopes of the Senca hill, passed near the Piuray lagoon, and next to Chinchero, continued to Maras.
Chinchero was founded in the middle of the most beautiful countryside in order to serve as a resting place for the Inca Túpac Yupanqui. There he ordered the erection of shrines, baths, platforms and the great royal palace in 1480. The chronicles relate that the ruler died in dark circumstances. Some believe that he was poisoned by his favorite princess, Chiqui Ocllo, although it could also be the coya Mama Ocllo herself, who resented the Inca's preference for the son of her concubine. In the struggle for power, all Chiqui Ocllo's supporters were exterminated, including the princess. The Inca's son, Cápac Huari, was confined for life in the Chinchero jail.
Around 1540, the rebel Manco Inca, in his flight to Vilcabamba, burned Chinchero to prevent his enemies from supplying themselves.
Chinchero has a rich monumental and cultural heritage. It is one of the few places in Cusco that conserves the Inca urban layout in a visible way. The remains of the Inca palace, the colonial church built on a stone base, its impeccable terraces and a colorful Sunday fair are its main attractions.
Besides the beautiful panorama, Chinchero is an interesting place where
the practice of ancient pre-Columbian customs can be observed that the settlers
locals have preserved. The colorful Sunday fair where they barter or sell their
agricultural products is the best time for a visit. The village has an old church
It houses colonial paintings, particularly those made by a local artist. Too
There is an important archaeological site that reveals the presence of pre-Columbian cultures and
Inca.
