In 1554, it was practically completed according to the First Renaissance form.
The new church now has three naves and four spans, without transept, with a single wooden cover for all naves and a headboard formed only by ousia.
The 1755 earthquake caused serious damage. Everything was initially repaired, but it was necessary to rebuild the church a few years later.
The ancient medieval chapel of São Martinho was profoundly altered in the second quarter of the 16th century, when this temple was elevated to a parish seat.
The works started at the beginning of the 19th century under the guidance of the architect Francisco Xavier Fabri, brought from Italy by the great patron, Bishop of the Algarve, D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar. This architect respected the pre-existing aesthetic values, having, however, built a new facade of majestic neo-classical composition.
