The earliest documentary reference concerning this church dates from 1220, integrating the patronage of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro.
The current temple corresponds to a later reformation. The Church is canonically oriented, that is, the headland turns to the east and the main facade to the west. It consists of a single nave and rectangular headboard.
It is a Romanesque construction, that is, it uses the constructive techniques, the plan and elevations proper of the Romanesque architecture, although it corresponds to an era in which Gothic architecture was very dominant.
The Church of São Mamede de Vila Verde is part of the tourist-cultural route of the Romanesque Route of the Sousa Valley.
