Castle hospital, stands in a dominant position over the village, elevated to the status of the Order's headquarters in the country since 1340.
The Castle of Crato, also known as Castle of Azinheira, in the Alentejo, is located in the village, Parish and County of the same name, District of Portalegre, Portugal.
The ruins of the castle feature Roman remains. The castle of the Crato was destroyed in 1662, by the army of D. John of Austria because of its resistance during the French Invasion.
