By a proposal of Law of February 11, 1879, the Government decided to open a tender for the "construction of a metal bridge over the Douro River, in the place deemed most convenient in front of the city of Porto, to replace the current suspension bridge". after the government did not accept a project of G. Eiffel et Cie. which only contemplated a board at the level of the river, with a drawable sector in the central part. The proposal was won by the Belgian company Société de Willebroeck, with the project of the Engineer Teófilo Seyrig, who had already been the author of the project and head of the project team of the D. Maria Pia Bridge. The construction begins in 1881 and the inauguration happens the 31 of October of 1886.
The structure of the new bridge, a true iron filigree that became, together with the Tower of Clerics, the ex-libris par excellence of Porto, weighed in its total 3,045 tons. The bridge was lit by artistic gas lamps, 24 on the upper board, 8 on the bottom, and 8 on the meetings.
