It is located at the northeast end of the Island and has 780m of perimeter. It was the Vice-Kingdom of India, Dom Joao de Castro, who in 1545 chose the place and gave orders for it to be built, beginning to join the stones.
It is customary to say that the stones of the Fortress came from Portugal or else from India. But it is enough to look closely at the great monument to conclude that the stones, at least those that are in sight, are the same as those that abound on the Island.
Even today the Island is not flat. From the remains of the rocky elevations that still exist, such as the one on which the Church of Health is built, we know that there were elevations that were destroyed to provide the stone to the buildings, made in the course of the centuries.
