Gamla Stan is the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. It consists of the island of Stadsholmen, but also extends through Riddarholmen and Helgeandsholmen.
Gamla is also named as "the city between the bridges". The name literally means "Old Town"
In this little piece of Sweden we can find narrow streets, splendid squares, towering houses with a medieval and renaissance aspect and, above all, the grand Baroque Royal Palace, built in 1760, with no less than 600 rooms. Currently, the kings of Sweden reside in Drottningholm Palace, but before lived here.
In this Royal Palace, precious treasures such as antique furniture, weapon collections, beautiful tapestries and Swedish crown jewels are kept.
Until recently, Gamla Stan was relatively abandoned and many of its historic buildings were demolished; However, in the last twenty years it has become a major tourist spot thanks to the charm of its medieval and renaissance architecture.
But beyond this palace in Gamla Stan are other buildings full of history and culture, such as the Nobel Museum, which opened in 2001 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of these prestigious awards. We also find the House of Nobility or the Knights (Riddarhuset), an impressive 17th century building dedicated to social events of the nobility, or the Riddarholmenla church, located on the island of Riddarholmen and where former Swedish monarchs are buried.
The Old Town is the historical center of Stockholm with very narrow streets. The most famous alley, Marten Trotzigs Grand, measures only 90 centimeters. Small shops and exclusive restaurants.
