The square is often used for artistic exhibitions, such as the United Buddy Bears exhibition that took place in 2009 and consisted of 140 six-foot tall sculptures, each painted by an artist from one of the 140 countries.
The design of the square is the work of the French architect and landscaper Carlos León Thays (son).
Among the species that can be seen in the botany of the place, there are ombúes, Phoenix, Syagrus and Canariensis palms, linden trees, willows, pines, magnolia grandiflora, gum trees, silky oak, ceibos and araucarias, as well as jacaranda trees brought from Tucumán by Carlos Thays son.
Two characteristic sectors of the square can be seen. One of them is the grassy ravine, from where you can see the Monumental Tower. The other sector is the one that faces the opposite side, with flat land covered by trees, and around which many historical and important buildings are located, such as the Kavanagh or the Peace Palace, occupied by the Military Circle.
Monument to General San Martín and the Armies of Independence: Equestrian monument in bronze on a polished granite base that honors General José de San Martín and four important milestones related to American independence: the Crossing of the Andes, the Proclamation of the Independence of Peru, the Battle of Salta and the Taking of Montevideo. The group formed by the Liberator on the horse was the first equestrian monument in Argentina (1862), the work of the French sculptor Louis Joseph Daumas. On the other hand, the bronze groups around the base are the work of the German sculptor Gustav Eberlein, and were inaugurated in 1910.

The Monument to the Fallen in Malvinas: it is a cenotaph located in the inside of the square, erected in honor of the fallen in the Falklands War. Located in the sector of the square that faces Avenida del Libertador, it is made up of 25 black marble plaques with the names of the 649 combatants killed in the war that occurred in 1982.

La Duda: It is located about ten meters from the sidewalk of Avenida Santa Fe, where it intersects with Calle Maipú. Made in Carrara marble by the French artist Cordier, it shows a young believer standing next to his open Bible, while an old man next to him seems to question him.

For 38 years the Fountain of the Maiden, also known as the Catalan Fountain, was located near the Statue of Esteban Echeverría, a white marble sculpture of a naked woman drawing water from a basin. It was donated by the Catalan Collectivity. Settled in 1931 in Rivadavia Park, it was relocated to Plaza San Martín in 1971, to return to Rivadavia Park in 2009.
Plaza General San Martín is the main green space in the Retiro neighborhood in Buenos Aires.
It is surrounded by Santa Fe Avenue, Esmeralda, Arenales, Maipú streets, Libertador Avenue and Florida Street.
It was declared a National Historic Site in 1942.
