Mount Pelée is an active volcano in the northern French department of Martinique in the Caribbean. It is a tall, conical volcano composed of extremely viscous magma and remnants of volcanic ash and solidified lava. It has an elevation of 1,397 meters above sea level.
Montagne Pelée originated a volcanic typology: Pelean-type volcanoes, where viscous magmas even form needles (pythons) that rise through the pressure of the lava; When these pythons break, there is a sudden outflow of the "burning clouds," consisting of large pyroclastic castings that devastate the entire environment of the volcanic system. In other cases, gigantic explosions can occur that completely destroy the volcanic building.
