With the patronage of Prince Henri of the Netherlands, the Société des Sciences Naturelles was founded thanks to the progress and dissemination of natural sciences in the paying market. In order to preserve the collections acquired by the company, everyone at the end of the National Library gathered at its disposal. The natural history office and its members are always on the lookout for objects that the Grand Duchy of Nature and natural sciences in general.

The Museum of the Société des Sciences Naturelles will hear these magnitudes to the public in 1854. The collections exhibit the behavior of the eight cabinets with ices of birds, mammals, reptiles and anatomical objects, three shell display cases and insect display cases and butterflies. Three entire rooms are reserved for minerals and fossils.

When the need was met in 1892 by the locals in the classrooms, the collections were transferred to Vauban at the Pfaffental (demolished in 1956). The accommodation of the natural history collections at this location puts the museum a bit under consideration, not being attractive to visitors.

Acquired by the State in 1922, the Collart-de-Scherff house and the famous “Old Gendarmerie”, located in the Marché-aux-Poissons, are being transformed into the needs of a museum.

Over long distances, the effect of restoration, management and installation work at the New State Museum. Pearl pendant all this issue of the collections remain closed to the general public. These transformations over a long time the subject of a political controversy and excessively long works arouse public anger. When in 1940 the installations were not nearly complete, the collections had to be moved again to the best protected locations of the museum because of the invasion by German troops.

After the war, in the afternoon I heard successively the rooms of the museum to the public. A temporary opening exhibition was held in 1946. The museum was opened in 1952.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Natural History Museum diversified its activities. Thus, geophysical and astrophysical sciences, with their planetarium, are entering the museum. In 1970, the museum had the main electron microscope in our country, useful for labor pains essential for research.

From 1980, the educational service for school classes, the start of environmental awareness activities (leisure activities for young people, Panda-Club, awareness activities, Museum-Bus, publications) and a glance at scientific research on the natural heritage.

Currently the National Museum of Natural History has 7 scientific sections (zoology, botany, paleontology, geology / mineralogy, ecology, anthropology / human biology, geophysics / astrophysics) as well as three general services (the administrative service, the technical service)) .

in June 1996, the History and Art Museum and the Natural History Museum shared the premises at Marché-aux-Poissons. Or, over the last decades, their collections and activities have diversified and multiplied in a Seoul way, a separation of the two museums seemed to resolve the lack of space.

In the seventies, the Natural History Museum was donated to the search for new premises and it was on February 6, 1986 that the Chamber of Deputies adopted the bill relating to the restoration of the Hospice Saint-Jean and to the development of this historic monument into a natural history museum. The administrative separation of the State Museums into a National Museum of History and Art and a National Museum of Natural History, instituted by the place of December 28, 1988, is reflected in the envelope of the two cultural institutes which have been distinguished by a different opinion of the public and of this contributor, both, for the cultural heritage of the Grand Duchy.

Since 1996, the National Museum of Natural History has welcomed its visitors in three buildings located on either side of Münster Street. Each building is a unique activity. Thus, the Hospice Saint-Jean opens the “natur musée” with these permanent and temporary exhibitions. The educational building has three classrooms for its awareness-raising and development education activities for young people and especially school groups.

Finally, the Scientific Research Center is made up of six offices-laboratories and two depots for collections. A team of researchers, in addition to above all good scientific collaborators, and even the backbone of the collections and scientific aspects of our museum.
