During the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Valparaíso was the obligatory stopover for shipping transit between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. During this time important groups of foreigners from far away and different latitudes settled in the city.
As a result, humanity left in this port, as well as loves, an enormous amount of material species of music that the immigrants brought with them for their rituals and to remember ancestral customs. Valparaíso welcomed them; a porteño, later, compiled them.
Fernando Ramírez Escare has today in his possession, listen well, more than 600 ethnic body instruments present in the Organological Museum of Valparaíso. And it is that for more than 32 years this man has dedicated himself to collecting musical instruments from the world, most of them collected in Valparaíso, and through Organology, its discipline, to study their origin, raw materials for construction, tuning, handling and history, among other trades.
Today, musical instruments from the most diverse cultures in the world can be visited in the permanent and unique exhibition in Latin America that the Organological Museum has for display in Valparaíso. An exclusive sample in which attendees will be able to observe and compare instruments with similar characteristics, but from different sources.
The Indian, Arab, Moroccan, Chinese, African cultures, among others, are present in this sample of instruments from the five continents, which, according to the classification of the researcher Curt Sachs, have been arranged in the following four families: Membranophones (drums ), Idiophones (triangles, maracas, bells, rattles), Aerophones (quenas, flutes) and Chordophones (violins, guitars).
A German Ocarina from the 19th century, a Pink Ebony Flute from 1830, the Ibáñez Spain Guitar from 1910 and another from the Valparaíso prison dating from 1910, are just some of the heritage instruments that this Organological Museum has that, in case It was not enough, it also has a classroom, a small "luthería" workshop, a recording studio, a musician-therapy room and a graphics workshop.

Visiting this place is, in short, traveling the world through music. However, it is above all to know the instrument that causes it, with all its load of mysticism; that instrument used by some other man who in other latitudes creates melodies by translating climates, geography, meanings, religions and experiences.
The invitation to take this trip has been made. A journey back in time to meet the different cultures that have passed through Valparaíso, leaving in this port perhaps the greatest of their loves: their musical instruments.
