Within the reform plan of the walls that covered the flank of the port of Cádiz, the construction of three identical buildings is projected and close to each other: the Customs, the House of Trade and the Consulate. Of the three, only the first is executed, in a neoclassical style, sober and with ample and balanced proportions. The works began in 1770 under the direction of the military engineer Juan Caballero at the request of King Carlos III, investing 7,717,200 reales. Its construction ended in 1784.
It is rectangular in shape with two quadrangular porticoed patios. It is built with oyster stone.
Inside the palace, it is worth highlighting the Royal Hall, built under the direction of the architect Juan de la Vega, a work carried out in 1862, when the palace served as a residence for Queen Elizabeth II, on his trip to Cádiz. It is decorated with marbles and carpets, highlighting the tempera paintings on its ceiling.
