Columns of Hercules was the name given to the headlands that exist in the Strait of Gibraltar, one in Africa (depending on the versions, Mount Hacho or Mount Musa) and another in Europe (the Rock of Gibraltar).
The name comes from Greek mythology, where it is said that Hercules, to do one of his twelve works, would need to cross a narrow sea. Having little time, he decided to open the way with his shoulders thus connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. On one side was a large rock, later called Gibraltar (Mount Calpe) and on the other side Mount Hacho or Mount Musa (Abilia or Ábila), the first situated in Ceuta and the second a few kilometers to the west. The two hills, once separated, were called "Hercules' Pillars" or "Hercules Pillars".
This milestone was surpassed by the Phoenicians and their sea lanes as they sought raw materials for the manufacture of fabrics, glass and other products for trade in the Mediterranean in general and Egypt in particular.
