It is a volcano of more than 3 million years (the oldest) that is found on the peninsula, the Poike volcano. This is the geologically oldest sector and the one with the least volcanic activity, despite the three cones that stand out in the landscape.
On the peninsula is the Poike ditch, the place where the battle between the Hanau eepe (“stout people”) and the Hanau momoko (“thin people”) would have occurred. According to tradition, the "stout people" lived in the Poike and had built a ditch full of combustible material, despite what the "thin people" would have attacked by surprise and killed almost all of them, burning them in pits. . The place is called until today ´´the curanto of corpulent people´´. From a geological point of view, however, this ditch is natural according to the characteristics of the Pascua volcanic formation.
23 kilometers to the northwest of Hanga Roa, accessing from Avenida Hotu Matua, it is easy to take the road to Poike.
It is accessed from Chile to Easter Island:
By plane
The simplest way to get there is by plane from Lan Chile which, between 2 to 4 times a week, connects with Santiago on its route to Tahiti. The trip takes 5 hours and arrives at the Mataveri airport, located in Rapa Nui.
Boat
Twice a year a ship brings supplies from the mainland that is landed in the Hanga Piko cove. It does not have a fixed departure date, although they generally take place in May and September. One possibility is to call the Municipality of Easter Island to ask.
Three archaeological sites stand out: Vai a Heva, Papa ui hetu u ’and Ana O keke.
The first is a huge head carved under a natural pool; the second, two sites with petroglyphs, where they used to see the stars and, finally, a cave where virgin women bleached their skin.
