Prague Castle is undoubtedly the most important monument in the Czech Republic. The seat of political and religious power since the 9th century, the castle consists of a wide range of palaces, churches, courtyards and gardens dominating the city of Prague.
During the 9th century a wooden fort was built to protect the residence of the princes Přemyslides. Inside the walls were built next to the wooden palace, several churches, which were the first stone buildings: the church of Our Lady (IX century, of which there are only a few vestiges left); the church and the Basilica of St. George (X century, modified several times); the St. Vitus Rotunda (10th century, which was in the current choir of the cathedral).
The castle as royal and imperial residence was the object of progressive changes throughout the centuries, mainly under the reign of Emperor Charles IV (XIV century), King Vladislao Jagellón (late fifteenth century and early sixteenth century), Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg (sixteenth and early seventeenth century) and Empress Maria Theresa of Habsburg (eighteenth century). After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1918, the castle became the natural seat of the new President of the Czechoslovak Republic. Nowadays, it continues being the official residence of the president of the Republic.
