Recuay Culture

More than 1500 years ago, in the stage called Early Intermediate, the inhabitants of the current province of Recuay developed one of the most important cultures of the time.

The Recuay culture occupied a large part of the Santa Valley and the Callejón de Huaylas.

The Recuay culture is known for its large cemetery, and burials of people who had a good position in society at that time.

These cemeteries were made up of underground galleries that can be reached from a tube more than 1 m deep and 0.70 m in diameter, which gives access to a chamber.

These burial chambers are plastered with very rough stone slabs attached to the wall.

The objects found as offerings include stone sculpture, through which warriors and women are represented in different styles, which have been called Aija, Huaraz and Huántar.
