The province of Cajabamba was founded by the friars of the ´´Order of the Hermits´´ of the Great Father Saint Augustine, who, detached from Spain by King Carlos V, with the permission of Pope Paul III, arrived in this region in the year of 1533.

Impressed by the delicious climate, by the beautiful panorama where the exuberant vegetation and the crystalline water springs offered an environment conducive to the development of a town; The friars were ecstatic by the imposing painting offered by nature, motive and reason why the three Juanes: Fray Juan de San Pedro (Master Prior), Fray Juan del Canto and Fray Juan Ramirez, settled on the right bank of the river Lanla (Melodious River)

As the beginning of their colonizing mission, the friars reorganized the ´´Huarangas´´ which were small groups of people, who were dispersed and who met only for work purposes. With the meeting of the Huarangas they founded the town of ´´San Nicolás de Tolentino de Cajabamba´´ and built a missionary chapel where the General Cemetery of Santa Ana is currently located. Tradition tells that Simón Bolívar, the Liberator, in his wake in Cajabamba in 1824, he affectionately called it ´´Gloriabamba´´ and danced a salty northern marinera with Mrs. Chepita Ramírez under the shade of a capulí (which is still preserved in the hamlet ´´La Pampa´´).

José de la Mar, gave Cajabamba the title of ´´Villa´´ (1837). Two years later, Agustín Gamarra, granted it the title of ´´Always faithful city of Cajabamba´´ and on January 2, 1850 the region was elevated to the category of province. In 1861 the construction of the current Mother Church was completed and the demarcation of the main city that bears the same name was made.
