The Caño de Sancti Petri is a current of seawater, which flows between the towns of San Fernando (located on an island), Chiclana de la Frontera and Puerto Real (on the peninsula), separating Chiclana and Puerto Real from the tomboy sandy where Cádiz and San Fernando settle. The Zuazo Bridge passes over it, a symbol of San Fernando and which links the city with the rest of the province.
The current territory of the province of Cádiz is one of the ´´consequences´´ of the formation, during the Miocene, of the Alps mountain range, which led to the thrust of the oldest materials in the area, which were superimposed on the most modern ones, while the European and African plates were gradually getting closer and closer.
It is at this time, for example, when the Guadalquivir valley or the south of the Iberian Peninsula begin to progressively rise above sea level.
With regard to the Cadiz coastline, the origin of the Bay of Cádiz could be dated around the Upper Miocene, as a result of a tectonic depression that, during the Pliocene and part of the Pleistocene, was occupied by a delta that formed the, at that time , coast line. The sand, limestone and conglomerate that was deposited there gave rise to the typical oyster stone, with which many of the buildings in the area were built and decorated. About 20,000 years ago, this delta, due to the change in sea level, was sinking until shortly before the Holocene, after which it began to stabilize.
In the decades after the end of the rise in sea level, due to the last warming of the polar ice caps and which also caused the area to move away from the continent, sands began to be deposited on the edge of that coast and the nearby islands that, by then, the so-called Gadeiras formed by Cimbis, Erytheia and Kotinoussa emerged in the bay, which, over the centuries, evolved in the current cities of Cádiz and San Fernando.
The deposits that were sedimenting gave rise to estuaries and marshes that sit on the banks of the pipe and that have been used over the centuries as salt flats.
