Creation
The Tabaconas Namballe National Sanctuary was established on May 20, 1988 by Supreme Decree No. 058-1988 - AG, through which the conservation of this area is ensured.
goals
Its objectives are to preserve and protect a representative sample of the Páramo area, species in danger of extinction such as the “Spectacled Bear” (Tremarctos ornatus), “Height Tapir” (Tapirus pinchaque) and the Podocarpus Forests, the microwatersheds of the Miraflores, Tabaconas and Blanco rivers as well as encouraging research and recreation.
Next to the Huancabamba depression, in northern Peru, is the southernmost páramo of the Northern Andes.
Due to its location, this sanctuary has been considered a priority area for conservation, since in addition to its unique ecological characteristics, it contains within its 29,500 hectares the headwaters of 3 important tributary watersheds of the Amazon: the Tabaconas River, the Blanco River. and the upper course of the Miraflores River.
It is located north of the department of Cajamarca, in the Province of San Ignacio, in an area of cloud forests called Páramo, an ecoregion whose climate combines the height and cold of the puna with the humidity and vegetation of the jungle.
The importance of the moors includes, among others, their high biological diversity, being an environment, protector of water sources. Its vegetation constitutes a reservoir of carbon and organic matter.
The páramos in Peru are permanent producers of rain, where the important rivers of the region are born, among others the Huancabamba (Piura / San Ignacio) and Chinchipe (San Ignacio) rivers, Blanco (Namballe), Miraflores or Chirinos (San José de Lourdes), Tabaconas river.
Likewise, it houses a high quantity and diversity of genetic resources of flora and fauna species, with species in danger of extinction such as the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), the high-altitude Tapir (Tapirus pinchaque) and the Podocarpus Forest.
This National Sanctuary will contribute to the protection of watersheds, ensuring the stability of the land, helping to maintain the quantity and quality of the waters, supporting the development of human and agrarian settlements in the lower parts, as well as ensuring the ecological balance and an adequate environment.
Tourist potential
It has an exceptional landscape, which includes moors, cloud forests, waterfalls and a system of lagoons called Arrebiatadas, to which medicinal properties are attributed. These lagoons are located at 3,200 meters above sea level and constitute an ecotourism attraction of great value.
