The National Museum of Art (Statens Museum for Kunst), located in Copenhagen, is one of the main museums in Denmark. It has more than 250 thousand pieces distributed among paintings, works on paper and statuary, composing a wide panorama of Western art from the Renaissance to contemporary times, with some even older works. Recently the Museum was merged with the National Art Library.
Its original building was built between 1889 and 1896, with a design by Wilhelm Dahlerup and G.E.W. Møller, following models of the Italian Renaissance in an eclectic interpretation. Suffering from the lack of exhibition space since its foundation, in the 1960s the collection of copies of sculptures was transferred to a special building near the Royal Palace in Amalienborg. In the 1970s, the available area was increased by covering the inner courtyard. In 1998 a new wing was added in the garden behind the museum, designed by Maria Indrio and Mads Møller in contemporary architecture, with a glazed gallery for communication with the old headquarters, called "avenue of sculptures".
Most of the collection has its origin in the collections of the kings of Denmark. The collections of the National Museum of Art are divided into the painting and sculpture departments, with almost 9,000 works; paper works, with more than 240 thousand items, and copies of large works of the old statuary, with more than 2,600 pieces. Among the most important masters he has are Mantegna, Titian, Tintoretto, Rubens, Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Picasso, Braque, Leger, Matisse and Modigliani. Danish art is represented by artists such as Oluf Høst, Edward Weihe, Olaf Rude and Haral Giersing.
The beginning of the collection of paintings dates back to 1750, when the Conservative of the Chamber of Art of King Frederick V suggested to the monarch that a separate section of painting be created for the collection gathered until then by royalty. In order to establish a collection that was not inferior to that of other great kings and nobles of Europe, large sums were allocated to acquisitions of Flemish, Italian and German paintings.
Since then, the ensemble has been consistently expanded, and in the 19th century there was a concern to gather a collection of Danish national art, from the impulse to painting given by the foundation of the Royal Academy of Art in 1754.
In the 20th century, modern works were incorporated into several important donations, notably Johannes Rump (1928) with French modernist paintings, and soon more acquisitions of paintings and sculptures also followed by the French school.
The set of works on paper is extremely rich, with an emphasis on Danish art from the 17th century onwards, and with pieces in engraving, drawing, photography, watercolor and other genres. It began to be reunited in the 14th century during the reign of Christian II. In 1843 the collection, until then privately owned by the royal house, was opened to the public, being incorporated into the National Museum when it was founded.
Part of this collection dates back to the middle of the 18th century, when plaster copies of masterpieces of antique sculpture began to be ordered to offer students of the newly founded Royal Academy models for study, as well as to facilitate access for ordinary citizens, educating your taste, to the great examples of ancient art. Following this same philosophy, the creation of the National Museum gave rise to the acquisition of several other copies, forming the rich collection that today is preserved there and that covers 4 thousand years of sculpture history.
