Its name derives from the brave and intrepid indigenous Zulia, from whom countless legends are woven. She was the daughter of the chief Cínera who lived on the banks of the Zulasquilla, in the domains of what is now known as Arboledas.
Zulia inherited from her father the gift of command and the value of her principles and ideals. It was an extraordinary beauty. Her father had knowledge of the presence of the Spanish and fearful that his territory would be razed again, as Ambrosio Alfínger had done, he sent his daughter to gather neighboring tribes such as the Guanes, in a defensive plan. He returned and found his father hanging from a tree and the town razed by the Spanish, under the command of Captain Diego de Montes.
A son of cacique Mara, a guajiro and at the same time adopted son of the cacique Cúcuta, ran at his call with a large number of brave warriors, reaching two thousand men ready for combat in Salazar lands, where Captain Diego de Montes was. . He was given combat, he was defeated and the captain who caused the death of the chief Cínera died.
