Thingvellir is a must stop for travelers along the Golden Circle route. It has been Iceland's national park since 1930 and was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004.
When the Viking settlers arrived here in the 10th century, it was chosen as the meeting place of the Althingi, the world's oldest parliament.
The location may seem a little out of the way, but the unique geology has created a natural amphitheater perfect for public speaking, including the high rock wall of Logberg (Law Rock).
In addition to its historical interest, Thingvellir has a special appeal for nature lovers. It is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.
