Torata is located in the Mariscal Nieto Province, Moquegua Region, on the left bank of the Torata River, 25 km northeast of the city of Moquegua, with a temperate climate and entirely paved road.

It is located between 17o 04 ’18’ ’South Latitude, and 70o 50’ 58 ’’ West Longitude with respect to the Greenwich meridian.

Inhabited Torata in pre - Inca times by the Cochunas and Yacangos tribes, they were subdued by the Quechua hosts of Mayta Cápac who undertook their march of conquest towards the west after subduing the Aymara people of the Altiplano. In order to resist the invader, the coshunas took cover with their women and children, apparently in "Cerro Baúl" and for 50 days they resisted the siege, surrendering due to hunger. The captains of Mayta Cápac, obeying orders from their general, were not spiteful or vindictive with the defeated, to whom they provided food and clothing, according to Gracilazo. Conquered Moquegua in the year 1120, Mayta Cápac founded 2 towns: MOQUEGUA and COCHUNA.

The people of Toledo actively participated in the fight for independence, taking place the battle of Torata on January 19, 1823 where the most representative Generals of Spain intervened such as: Canterac, Jerónimo Valdez and Andrés García Camba and on the side of the patriots the distinguished Moqueguano Domingo Nieto with only 19 years of age.

During one of the governments of Castile, the Cavalry regiment "CARABINEROS DE TORATA" was created among other army corps with four companies.

November 12, 1823 can be estimated as the birth share of all the districts of Peru, since when the constitution of that date was promulgated, in the new established political demarcation, the doctrines of the Viceroyalty became a district, and this is how Moquegua, together with Torata, Ilo, Carumas, Omate and Puquina became six districts of the province of Moquegua.
