Approximately equidistant from the cities of Évora and Beja, the castle stands at the top of an elevation, in a dominant position over the village. It is considered, along with the Castle of Alvito, one of the most notable fortified architectural ensembles of the late Gothic period. Its name, Viana do Alentejo, is linked to the nobiliárquico title of the family Meneses, first counts of Viana, that stood out in the Portuguese campaigns of Morocco in century XV.
The castle, of Gothic style, presents in addition to volumes trecentistas, adornments in Manueline style and mudéjar, fruit of the diverse constructive periods.
The castle is classified as a National Monument.
